Society doesn’t need newspapers. What we need is journalism. For a century, the imperatives to strengthen journalism and to strengthen newspapers have been so tightly wound as to be indistinguishable. That’s been a fine accident to have, but when that accident stops, as it is stopping before our eyes, we’re going to need lots of other ways to strengthen journalism instead.

When we shift our attention from ’save newspapers’ to ’save society’, the imperative changes from ‘preserve the current institutions’ to ‘do whatever works.’ And what works today isn’t the same as what used to work.

The biggest brand in brawling, UFC, is a mix of muscle and mayhem making money hand over fist. CNBC goes inside the octagon with front man Dana White, the fighters and the billionaire backers who turned the league from a dying franchise into a global sensation.

Right now, I can honestly say that I believe local pay-per-click marketing is the new gold rush. Actually, I think it’s even better than that. It’s really like shooting fish in a barrel. It’s really that easy.  I’m sure a bunch of people will post comments with all of their excuses as to why this will not work for them.  Do not be discouraged by them.  Find a local niche and try it.  Its going to take a little bit of hard work but it’s really the new frontier.  There is a HUGE dislocation in how cheap it is to advertise on these social networks – probably bigger than the ringtone market of years ago when I wrote about it.  Get after it!

I can’t wait to see the two main events. I got BJ Penn winning handily vs KenFlo. I just think KenFlo doesn’t have the experience and skills yet to challenge BJ, who’s only lost once in the 155lb weight.

And Anderson Silva is one of my favorite fighters. However, it should be a battle vs Forrest Griffin since Forrest is bigger. Anderson has got to be aggressive early since it’s only a 3 round fight. If he’s passive, Forrest could steal the fight with a decision.

These aren’t high class or high profile names either.  Well, I guess David Williams is high profile since he got 2nd in an main event WSOP but when you look at their MTG accomplishments, they’re not that great compared to the MTG greats.

You would think that Texas would have a bigger presence in the MTG pro scene since it’s well populated but that’s just not the case.  Hopefully, the top eight of both Drew Dumanski and Mark Hendrickson will change that.  They’re both from Dallas, TX.  I used to live there until I recently moved to San Antonio.

Drew is the 3rd seed and Mark is 1st seed so they’re on opposite brackets.  This means we could see an all Texas final.

Drew ran a Shuhei’s list that won Japan’s Nationals last week.  He modified the sideboard to include Liliana Vess and Scepter of Fugue.  This was definitely the right call since the tournament was full of other Five Color Control decks and Faeries.

One interesting note from the top 8.  Everyone, and I mean everyone, is running a full set of Great Sable Stag in the sideboard.  This card is definitely for real and does a good job against any deck running counter magic.

But Mark Hendrickson’s deck has got to be the talk of the tournament.  It definitely defines the meaning of rogue deck.  I mean, would you have ever thought these cards would be in the maindeck of a top 8 deck in a high profile tournament?

All I can say is “wow”.  And my hat’s off to him.  His decklist looks like a pile but it obviously works.  He won a grinder with a similar list, went 6-1-1 in the Standard portion (the draw was intentional), and even went 3-0 versus 5 Color Control.  I guess Goblin Assault is tech.
